Description

Learn how massage therapy can positively impact clients suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Combining four articles written especially for the Institute's Massage Professionals Update E-newsletter, this brief program will provide insights into:

  • The symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and treatment plan.
  • How the therapeutic relationship can help clients with PTSD.
  • The healing energy of essential oils and blends for PTSD.
  • Helping clients trust your touch.

In the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) & Massage program we've combined four articles written especially for the Institute's Massage Professionals Update. These four articles include:

  • Symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder - The number of military troops with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) has increased steadily in recent years. The earlier it's treated, the better the chances are for recovery. Learn how various massage therapy techniques can play an important part in the healing process of PTSD.
  • The Therapeutic Relationship in Post Traumatic Stress Disorder - Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD, is a real and devastating cycle that is being fielded by an increasing number of healthcare professionals. Bodyworkers are often sought by people caught in this cycle. Massage therapists can provide the technique, care and support needed for PTSD healing to occur.
  • Aromatherapy Complements Massage for Trauma - Essential oils have proven medicinal properties and can amplify the effectiveness of massage therapy. Few medicines have the capability of positively affecting the body, mind and spirit as powerfully as essential oils. This capability makes aromatherapy a logical choice when treating the effects of trauma.
  • Helping Clients Trust Your Touch - Although massage therapists are accustomed to their touch inducing relaxation, this is not an automatic response for many people. The trust issues prohibiting some from enjoying bodywork can be relieved by a therapist’s commitment to helping clients feel safe.

You can either read the articles by clicking on any of the titles above or upon enrollment you'll be able to access these articles and your online test through your online course account.

I really enjoyed this class. I had wanted to take it for quite some time and am glad I finally did. I learned a lot of information regarding PTSD that I didn't know before. I know this information will help me to serve this special population with better skills now that I have taken this class. I am also a massage therapy instructor. One of the classes I teach is Pathology. We touch on PTSD as one of the mental diseases/disorders that students can encounter, but this information is paramount to what I teach in class. I have told all of my students about that class. Thank you for putting out quality continuing education material!

I really appreciate this course. The teacher showed understanding and compassion through what was taught here. I now know of other forms of therapy in the detail that shows me how useful they really are in treating PTSD and how they can help heal trauma. I have always been drawn to treating people with various kinds of trauma. I definitely recommend this course.

Marinna Elaine Hinkle, MACP, BCMTB

The material in this course was extremely interesting and timely. With the culture of trauma that is infesting this country and planet, this information is essential for a massage therapist to know. Although some of the material is dated in this coursework (the military statistics are based on 2007 stats), it doesn't take much to deduce that the numbers have increased since then. Most surprising this information, as it relates to massage therapy, held my attention and gave me more practical information to help my practice.

Shirley Williams, LMT, BCTMB

This was a very interesting topic and well explained!

Serjio Gutierrez, LMT

As a Massage Therapist and current student to become a Certified Aromatherapist & EO Specialist I was thrilled to see aromatherapy be a great part of this course. I would highly recommend the course to anyone.

Janel Norton, RMT

Always learn new things! I am pleased to see the inclusion of aromatherapy as well as incorporating modalities with Swedish massage.

Jeanne Heuberger, LMT

There were several points that were touched on that were especially useful to me. Most important were the things to keep in mind when working with a client with PTSD, a sort of mental preparation before and during the session. In addition I found the section on aromatherapy very interesting and educational. In the past I have worked with immigrants seeking asylum who had suffered torture in their home countries. I wish I had taken this course when I was doing that work.

Jonathan Levy, LMT

I have used other courses but this one is by far my favorite.

Dawn Harmon, LMT
