Learning Objectives

"Stroke is a medical emergency. With proper treatment, the damage from a stroke can often be minimized. Activate the Emergency Medical System (EMS) by calling 911 if a client shows any of the following signs and symptoms that a stroke is occurring:
- sudden slurred speech or difficulty swallowing
- sudden confusion or difficulty understanding conversation
- sudden numbness or paralysis on one side of the body
- sudden blurred vision or asymmetry of pupil dilation (one pupil is larger than the other)
- sudden extreme headache
- dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
- loss of consciousness (in severe cases)"
