Sample Text

"Transference

Transference is the projection by a client of feelings, needs or issues onto a therapist instead of recognizing them as his or her own. Most transferred feelings were experienced earlier with a parent, sibling or other significant person in the client's life, and something about the therapist or the current situation links the client's unconscious mind to the past experience. Transference is a common occurrence in the therapeutic professions, no matter if they are body-centered, mind/emotion-centered, spirit-centered or others. Transference can feel wonderful when the client projects positive or flattering attributes on us, but it can feel horrific when s/he projects negative attributes on us. For example, if a client's mother wore a certain fragrance and the therapist wears the same or a similar fragrance, the client may unconsciously transfer the feelings, issues and needs s/he has with mother onto the therapist. There are probably an unlimited number of variations possible on the theme of transference." (Ethics Refresher by Sharon Burch, 2004, p. 13)
