"Echinacea is one of the most widely used and heavily studied immune-boosting herbs in the world. There are many different varieties that have health benefits. The root, stem, leaves and flower may be used. Echinacea boosts the white cells’ ability to surround and destroy bacterial and viral invaders and stimulates the lymphatic system to clean up waste material and toxins (Mowrey, 1986). It is a potent T-cell stimulator that has been used effectively in treating colds, flu, bronchitis, whooping cough, tonsillitis, Candida and upper respiratory infections (Foster, 1991). The following are key points about Echinacea:
- Choose standardized extracts of 2.4% to 3.5% echinacosides
- Stimulates the immune system and boosts the production of interferon
- Reduces the duration and severity of colds, flu’s and other infections
- Can be taken orally or applied topically around wounds.
- For colds and flu, take up to 200 mg five times a day
- For other infections, take 200 mg three or four times a day
- Not to be used for more than eight weeks
- This is not a replacement for antibiotics but it can be used to complement them
Echinacea can over stimulate the immune system and worsen autoimmune problems, such as lupus, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, etc. It is contraindicated for people who are allergic to the daisy family. There are no known side effects other than the two listed above." (Staying Well: Alternatives to Antibiotics, by Sharon Burch, MSN, RN, NCTMB(2008)
